Logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum) was initially used by the Indigenous populations of the Yucatan Peninsula in Central America. It shifts colors based on the acidic and alkaline conditions of its environment in addition to being a pH indicator.

I conducted field research in Belize in the winter of 2023 to locate, process and extract logwood from original sources. The dye from logwood is hematoxylin (C16H14O), extracted by boiling chips in water. Oxidation allow the stages of color production.
